I have been successful at altering some shadow shapes into a black transparent smoke shape so that we now have black transparent smoke!

I will be doing some additional testing in the next few days and post some pics...

1 drawback is that I doubt it will be able to alter its width like regular smoke does, as the equation for smoke size altering is includedin the original smoke shape file, and obviously it isnt in the new smoke shape file, so I will have to pick a size and use it...

I have to also do further experiments to see if this change effects the current white transparent smoke. Hopefully it wont do that...

I just wish I was able to understand the original smoke shape file better so that I could alter it instead of replacing it, but I dont. There are limits in my knowledge of hex editing, even after all the years of work on FAF...

More to come...

UPDATE: Just did a quick test and unfortunately this change also wipes out our original transparent white smke, shich I highly prefer to this smoke...

I will next test crash smoke to see if that changes as well...

Unfortunately this isnt looking to good for black transparent smoke... Confused

Well it effects the crash smoke as well...

I am very dissappointed! This means my approach of using altered shadow shapes for new transparent black smoke will not work...

This also means that this testing is at a dead end until I can get a better understand of the hex editing of the original smoke shape to accomplish this same effect without deleting the other smoke effects...

Here are some pics of my 1st experiments with the new transparent black smoke...

The good thing to come out of this testing is that I proved, but still need further experimentation on, is that the transparent smoke doesnt use the SMOKE.PIC graphic at all. I thought that perhaps it might use the transparent section of the file so it did not overright the transparentcy...

But when I altered the default smoke.sh file and altered the call line for the SMOKE.PIC graphic, the transparent smoke still worked but the black, white, and grey smoked caused an instant CTD...

This at least points to the fact that the original smoke.sh file MIGHT be able to be rewritten in the future to give us transparent white and transparent black smoke...

This would eliminate the other colors though, but I dont use them in FAF anyway, except for gun flash and black smoke would do just as well...

CAG would you be able to replace the old white smoke used on the carrier launch to represent steam catapult? Perhaps make that smoke the white transparent smoke instead? It sure would look more authentic if you could!

I dont know, that is something for future work...

THis project has taken to long to complete and I have lost all my help. I really miss having radical_d and Duke around to pitch in as well as Kap and Gunsmoke, and plenty of others that have come and gone over the years...
