Trick question. F-100 was first to break speed of sound
"in level flight". However, your standard F-86 could exceed
Mach 1 in a shallow dive. And she was doin' it way before
the Huns first flight. |

Of course its a trick question...
All my polls are a trick questions...
Or are they?
And dont be so certain it is indeed the F-86...
Remember there were swept wing versions of the F-84 as well and the F-80 was used for 'compressibility' testing after Yeagers sound breaking flights...
The real question here is, how tricky is this poll? Just a little tricky or a heck of alot tricky??

I would have to check but I think the sweptwing F-84 Thunderstreak came after the F-86 Sabre.
And you didnt say the plane survived the pass through Mach lol. My guees would be P-80
In the early 40's a P-38 broke windows in Saint Louis, ( my dad was there ) you tell me why _________________ FAF/FA-2 FM Wizard

I think Kap may be onto something here!
But then again, maybe he isnt...
But not to worry, the P-38 was never in USAF service...

The F-84 Thunderstreak is also not listed, but the F-84 Thunderjet is and it was much more powerful then the F-80 and was flying prior to the F-80 and also used in compressability testing...
Back to Strike threeee... Your still out!

let me fix this for ya
F-84 Thunderjet=straight wings
F-84 Thunderstreak=swept wings
F-84 Thunderflash=sweptwings, intakes in wing roots like Thud, camera/recon gear in nose ( get it, thunder"flash" as in photographers flash equipment, arnt they clever lol )
So I'm still at steeeerike tooooo and your at steeeerike one lol _________________ FAF/FA-2 FM Wizard

Neagatory good buddy, I always knew the F-84 was straight wing. I have built many of them for FAF Korea 1950s...
Besides just becasue I mentioned the swept wing version of the F-84, it doesnt mean I was referring to it in the poll... Just more subterfuge!
So your back to strike threeeee - Your OUT again and that makes three outs so the inning is over!!!
