But first a bit of background... The F-104 Entered Production before any of the other listed aircraft... The F-104A and F-104B both entered squadron service with the USAF in 1957/58... However they were immedaiately transferred into the Air National Guard with service support for the Air Defense Command as a point interceptor... The Production of the A/B was terminated, replaced by the F-104C in 1958/59 which went into USAF squadrons in both TAC and ADC... It was deployed by TAC in late 1959 - early 1960, to West Germany for use as a point interceptor for forward based NATO Units... But it was not the first Mach 2 jet in squadron service in Europe... That aircraft (and the winner of this poll) was the Saab Draken which had entered production on 15 February 1958 and was in initial squadron service by the end of that year. Thus the Saab Grippen beat the F-104 in deployment to squadron service in Europe, and it barely beat the English Lightning by just a few months... By the way, the Mirage III was the leader in the poll and it turned out to be the last of the group into squadron service in Europe...
