Which aircraft flew 1st attack mission during the WWII battle of Midway?
1) B-17 FlyingFortress (day bombing attack)
2) B-26 Marauder (day torpedo attack)
3) PBY Catalina (night torpedo attack)
4) SBD Dauntless (day dive bombing attack)
5) TBD Devastator (day torpedo attack)

Vote for the aircraft you believe flew the first attack mission of this battle and then post the reasons for your choice!!

CAG,
Knowing how tricky you are, I chose the Japanese VAL Divebomber, since it is the only Japanese aircraft on the list! _________________

I have no experience with 'tricky' polls that are mentioned above, but I believe it was the TBD Devastators of Torpedo Squadron 8. They were all wiped out, with the exception of a single man, Ensign Gay. |

Only time will tell...

The PBY Catalina flew a night torpedo attack against the Japanese Navy invasion fleet before any of the carrier based aircraft, from either side, ever entered the battle. |

Hmmmmmmmm...
Maybe that is why I listed it as the only night attack?
But then again... Maybe not!!
I am, after all, pretty tricky on my polls!
Only time will tell!

CAG
I voted for the B17. B17's from Midway attacked the Invasion and Occupying Fleet after being spotted by one of the "Strawberry" PBY's. One B17 scored a hit on a tanker. The PBY reported the ships as Main Force, I beleive.
But didn't Midway's VMF212 Buffalo's engage and shoot down some Emilys a day or two before the air strike on Midway? The Emilys were searching for our carriers for their carrier striking force.
The last two polls I got wrong. I hope to change my score on this one.

Its true Pappy the B-17s did indeed attack the Japanese Fleet after the Catalina's located them and the attack took place the next day, since the sighting had to first be confirmed again by more Catalina...
But did the Catalina's Torpedo attack take place that night, or the next?
Hmmm....
As for the Buffalos, they never flew attack missions, only fighter missions and are not part of this poll...

B-26 was the first daylight torpedo attack. I think this occurred after the B-17 strike. |

Did you forget to post the answer to the poll? Just curious.

Oh you know me Pappy, I wait to the very last minute (usually right after you ask about it! )...
The answer is...
The most obvious choice... The B-17s!
They flew the first attack missions of the Midway Campaign when the Japanese transports that were first sighted by the Catalina were confirmed by a second set of flights...
Still well outside the range of all other aircraft, from both sides, in the campaign...
Pappy you win another one !!!
