I guess the XJ10. It kinda of looks like a J10 and the pilot has a Chicom flight helmet.

Everything other than the "chin-take" in that pics screams MiG-21 so I voted YF-21 but since the Ruskies dont hold to our system of naming prototypes it's probobly wrong. _________________ FAF/FA-2 FM Wizard

Good eye Kap, but didnt the Chinese base nearly all their major improvements and updates off the MiG-21 during the 1970s thru the late 1980s until we cut off all aid?
But then again, is this bird Chinese like Pappy thinks... Or?

I voted XJ-10, but I havent the faintest what it actually could be called.
Does look very much like a Mig-21 descendant though. A very goofy one at that. _________________

Hmmmm...
I have heard alot of ties to the J-10 in these posts, and then in the same posts many referrences to the MiG-21...
Correct me if I am wrong, but the J-10 developed from the F-16/Lavi connection, and not the MiG-21, right?
So which is it, J-10 or MiG-21 based...
And is this bird Chinese or Russian based, or who?
Afterall, wasnt the Mig-21 produced in many other nations then just these?

I don't understand why there is so little interest. You pose some interesting and hard questions.
You might as well post the answer.

Yea I guess my questions are just to hard for the lame brains that visit this forum... Just Kidding!
The answer is...
Ye-8
You were all correct in saying it resembled the MiG-21...
The Ye-8 was an advanced development of the MiG-21, but it was created back in 1960!!
The Soviets had the right idea, but blew it by not developing it. This version of the MiG-21 would have eaten F-4 Phantoms alive!
It was turned down for production because it was considered to complicated!!
Sorry Pappy, she had nothing to do with the Chinese!
Quote: | Originally, the Ye-8 was designed as a prototype for next generation of MiG fighters. The design stage of the project started in 1960. Original designation for new airplane was MiG-23. The basis for this next generation fighter was greatly redesigned MiG-21PF.
Most prominent new features were redesigned front part of the airplane with Eurofighter-style jet intake, canard foreplanes and redesigned rear part of the fuselage to accomodate new engine. There was great number of other features that were different from MiG-21PF -from new ejection seat and canopy to modified rudder and new fin under the rear part of the fuselage.
Two prototypes (Ye-8/1 and Ye-8/2) were built in 1962. These prototypes differed in details from each other. These prototypes were subsequently extensively tested. The Ye-8/1 was lost during testing due to engine malfunction.
The Ye-8 project was cancelled in 1963, but it served as testbed for testing new technologies for later generation of Fishbeds and also for MiG-23 Flogger.

A swing and another miss! I had some doubts about my guess of XJ10 a couple of weeks ago, but I had already voted. However, these polls are a learning experience. Dispite the sometimes low interest, please continue them.
