Which pair of aircraft were in the highest altitude intercept (49,500 ft) with the intercepting pilot having no pressurized cockpit or pressure suit?

Spitfire vs Ju86P

FW-190 vs Mosquito

MiG-15 vs RB-45

MiG-17 vs RB-47

MiG-21 vs RB-57

J-8II vs EP-3E

Vote for the pair of aircraft you believe were involved in this highest altitude interception by a fighter pilot with no pressure suit or pressurized cockpit, then post the reasons for your choice!!

Those are some pretty cool match-ups. The "no presurrization" is the key part.

No wanted to think about it a bit, the non pressurized note leads me to belive it was WWII. WWII is NOT one of my centers of interest. They had lots of high alt programs during WWII including a pink long winged Spitfire for recon. So I am going to guess it was the Spit verses Junkers option. The 86P could nearly reach that altitude and may have tried to out climb a determined Spitfire. I dont think a FW could catch a Skeeter at anywhere near that altitude.

CAG

I think it was also WWII aircraft. Jet aircraft would have presssurized cockpits and G suits. I vote for the Spitfire and the Junker.

But, I am expecting a trick. Smile

Pappy

Pappy,

During the Korean War, the early version of the MiG-15 had no cockpit pressurization and Russian pilots had no G suits...

But then again, I never said G-suits were a requirement of this poll, just pressure suits... Wink

Well the MiG-15s maximum altitude was roughly 51,000 ft...

Could this be the bird that accomplished the kill? Question

Only time will tell! Razz

It looks like this poll was just a bit to much on the technical side and not a huge interest to members...

Either that, or they all went AWOL again... Confused

There have been 191 views on the poll, but very few shooters? They are trying to figure the trick. Smile Smile

Yes Pappy you sure are!...

And the answer is...

The most ovbious one of all...

And the hardest to believe...

The Spitfire vs Ju86P...

That a non pressurized piston engined WWII Fighter could effectively operate at the same maximum altitude that today F/A-18E/F can fly is still amazing to me!

This kill will never be forgotten, that is for sure!
