Which Naval Combat Aircraft was the First to shoot itself down?
Your choices are...
1. AD1 Skyraider
2. F9F Panther
3. F9F Cougar
4. F11F Tigercat
5. F8U Crusader
6. F-14 Tomcat
Make your choice and then post your opinion on which of these Naval Aircraft was the 1st to shoot itslef down!!
Also make sure you scroll up and submit your vote in the poll at the top of the page, as some of you forget to actually place your vote!

Dont you mean the F3H Demon? (not the F3U...)
It had a very checkered history of engine failures with its initially failed J-40 engine (F3H-1N ), which was replaced by a near equally troublesome J-71 engine (F3H-2N) early in development...
Until 1962...
On September 18, 1962, the US Department of Defense combined all Air Force and Navy aircraft designations into the existing Air Force system. A new F-for-fighter series was begun, and Navy and Marine Corps fighters were redesignated to fit in with the new system. The F3H was redesignated F-3B/C. The designation F-3A was never assigned, probably being a reflection of the unfortunate F3H-1N which never entered service.
However, about the self shootdown... You thought wrong...
So are you going to take a guess and vote? _________________ CAG Hotshot

CAG
I vote for the F11. I know the other Navy aircraft on the list that shot itself down.

Aside from the F-14s we gave the Iranians back in the days of yore, The Skyraider seems like a plane we'd sell to other countries that we might have wound up fighting later on...
Unless of course you count using old grumman planes as target practice.

this is quite possibly one of the best poll questions.
By the way, what with the F-designation discussion a few posts up, I've always wondered why they gave the Nighthawk the F-117 designation. Isn't it more of a B or F? _________________

The F-117 was designated a fighter for 2 reasons...
To mislead foreign espionage and to keep the aircraft from being counted as a bomber...
And yes this is a good poll, and a tricky one to! So be careful!

I vote for the F-8 Crusader.
My reasoning? It must have shot itself down either with guns or
sidewinder missile; so it had to be pretty fast to outrun its own
amunitions....
Hence the F-8 Crusader.
Just my undervaluated (or is it??) Canadian 2-cents.
