HS-293 was the obvious choice until you put all those restrictions on it ( large wings etc ), still mulling, havent voted. _________________ FAF/FA-2 FM Wizard

My opinion is the Vietname war and not World War II, because the WWII HS 293 is really nothing more then a powered glide bomb, and not a missile. Missiles have enough velocity to sustain flight without wings and are guided, so the HS 293 only meets one of those requirements. I have to say I agree with CAG Hotshot's definition on this poll! |

Thanks Joe, I am glad to see someone agree with me!
A real definiton of what exactly a missile is, and not what it isnt, was more difficult to come by then I thoguth it would be.
Therefore I settled on listing what it wasnt...
Short Definition, NOT a powered glide bomb, though you could make the arguement that the AGM-130 must also not be a missile, since it is just a power addon to the GBU-15 Glide bomb, and I would agree, though the USAF seems to be so confused by the issue they cant even give the AGM-130 a name, like they do all their missiles...

With your help I changed my vote. Thank you. I changed my vote to the 6 Day War. I think an Isreali tin can was hit by an Arab missile.

Pappy |
Yes Pappy, an Israeli Destroyer was indeed hit by a antiship missile...
However, it was a SURFACE TO SURFACE antiship missile...
NOT an air launched antiship missile!

Your definitions also eliminate all true cruise missles as they all have "large wings", I dont know of anyone that wouldent consider cruise missles as anything other than a missle. _________________ FAF/FA-2 FM Wizard

Dont remember which one I voted for the other day (lol ) but I'm gonna guess the Falklands as the Exocete was one of the very first Anti-Ship missles along with Harpoon and was used with effect in the Falklands. _________________ FAF/FA-2 FM Wizard

Well Pappy,
I didnt exactly say you lost the poll, just that the example you used was a surface to surface antiship missile strike, not an ait to surface strike.
Of course, that in itself doesnt mean that there was no air to surface antiship missile strikes in that war...
Or does it?

Good Poll CAG! I picked the Yom Kippur war because the Israelis were resupplied with nearly every US missile then available and used missiles to sink 2 Egyptian patrol boats in the Suez during their counter offensive. _________________ Asst Forum Admin
